About Us

Welcome To Hoaganie Farm

Hoaganie Farms is a fourth-generation family farm located on 120 acres just outside Bryan and College Station, Texas.

The Ross family has cared for this land since the late 1800s. What began with the sacrifice of Jack and Charity Ross continues today through regenerative farming, livestock, seed growing, education, and a commitment to leave the soil better for the next generation.

Our Beginning

The story of Hoaganie Farms begins with Jack Ross.

The story of Hoaganie Farms begins in the late 1800s with Jack Ross, a formerly enslaved man who built a new life in Bryan, Texas. He became the town blacksmith and earned a strong reputation for the quality of his work. That reputation eventually gave him a rare opportunity for a Black man at the time, the chance to purchase 120 acres near the Brazos River.

The land wasn’t considered valuable. It flooded often, much of it was covered in dense forest, and many people believed it couldn’t produce much. Jack saw something different. He saw ownership, security, and land his family could build a future on.

Jack worked until he paid off the land note, tracking every payment by cutting a notch into a tree because he couldn’t read or write. According to Ross family history, when the note holders saw that he had kept an accurate record and completed the payments, they cut down the tree and forced him to start over. Jack had to pay for the same land twice.

He didn’t live long enough to make the final payment. His wife, Charity Ross, finished what he started and completed the purchase several years after his death. Because of their sacrifice, the land stayed in the family and became a place where future generations could farm, raise families, learn, and build something of their own.

More than 120 years later, the Ross family still cares for those same 120 acres. Fourth-generation farmers Phil, Ken, Ronda, and P. Wade Ross continue the work started by their great-grandparents. They honor the traditional practices passed down through the family while using regenerative methods such as soil layering, crop diversity, rotational grazing, natural fertility, and whole farm resource management.

The tools may have changed, but the responsibility hasn’t. At Hoaganie Farms, the work is still grounded in patience, care for the land, and a belief that healthy soil is the foundation for everything that follows. As the family often says, it’s farming with a pitchfork and the blessings of nature.

Be Loyal to the Soil

“Be Loyal to the Soil” is more than a saying at Hoaganie Farms.

It guides how we manage the property.

When the soil is protected, it holds more water and supports healthier plants. It produces better forage for livestock and gives the farm a stronger foundation for the future.
